Heart Transplant surgery is indicated in individuals with intractable heart failure who face the prospect of certain death without heart transplant surgery. The diseased heart is replaced with a healthy heart from a brain dead donor.

 

Some of the indications of heart transplant are as follows: 1. NYHA III or IV despite optimal medical therapy. 2. Malignant ventricular arrythmias refractory to medical therapy. 3. Inoperable ischemic or valvular heart disease with refractory symptoms. 4. Congenital heart defects, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, localised cardiac tumors.

 

Once deemed suitable for Heart Transplant after initial screening and acceptance by the patient and his/her relatives, the patient is admitted for evaluation.

Dr. Manoj Durairaj an ex Vincentian has done MS General surgery from AFMC(Gold Medal) and M.Ch. in Cardiac Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi.

He is the Executive Member of the Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons

And Society of Heart Failure and transplantation. He is also the Joint Secretary of Indian Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.

He is the Director of Cardiac Surgery at Marian Cardiac Centre located at East Street Pune Camp. Dr Durairaj is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic, N M Wadia hospital, Jehangir Hospital and Sahyadri Hospital, Pune.
